The 4 Best Meet Cutes to Meet Your Next Swoon Worthy Book Boyfriend
Romance novels always give off that special feel when you read them. Even the best tearjerkers can make you invest in a good stockpile of Kleenex tissues, am-i-right? No matter what trope it is, there are different elements of your next read that makes it stand out to you, especially romance books. But for me, meet-cutes are the chocolate syrup on an ice cream sundae. When the hero and heroine first meet and we learn their first thoughts about each other, swoon! In the words of Janice from Friends, “Oh-My Gawd”. I can’t get enough. Here’s a list of my top 4 meet-cutes for book boyfriends that will just melt my heart.
1. The Boyfriend Swap
Heroines in romance novels always—and I mean always—have the worst ex-boyfriends. They either have a boyfriend they caught cheating or have cheating tendencies. I roll my eyes whenever the jerky ex-boyfriend’s actions flit across my e-reader. This leaves the heroine in ‘distress’. Our hearts just automatically pull, because we feel for her.
Now here’s where it gets steamy. That jerky ex-boyfriend will do something to other females around the heroine, and she’d cringe. But this doesn’t get past our new book boyfriend of this particular romance. Enter our first steamy meet-cute that I absolutely love: the hero will swoop in, all steamy, swoony, and totally badass, and pose as her new love interest because he couldn’t keep his eyes off of the heroine and can’t stand to see her being mistreated. Our favorite author will fill us with all the meet-cute necessities, full of steamy lines and smooth moves to ice out the jerk of an ex-boyfriend and to ensure that they’ll see each other again. Because let’s face it. We’re totally looking forward to their next encounter to see how it all unfolds.
2. Hometown Romance
I feel like Journey should be played for all hometown romances. They’re usually small-town romances, with someone coming back home because they’re down on their luck and need refuge and bam! They meet some cute guy/girl and have this instant pull towards them. It gives me all the should I stay, or should I go vibes and makes you root for them no matter what obstacles they may face. And if you’re a glutton for punishment like me, then you REALLY love the second chance romance for hometowns. Book lovers, you know what I’m talking about. The hero/heroine is absolutely dreading going back home because their ex is there, and they’re still hurt over their breakup from years ago and no one has been able to compare. It’s no wonder hometown romances makes this list. The steam is in the history.
3. One Night Only
I’m here for a good time, not a long time. The number one slogan for this next meet-cute. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Maybe your book boyfriend is on a work conference and met his heroine in the hotel lobby or a local bar and they have their ‘special moment’. They lower their inhibitions for one night only, thinking they’ll never see each other again. And they wish things were different because they can be the person who they settle down with. But—and there’s always a but — before the heroine wakes up our book boyfriend leaves before sunrise. (Damn it).
Luckily, they never leave each other’s minds. They wonder what they’re doing. If the other person still thinks of that night as much as they do. (The answer is a resounding duh). What makes this meet-cute so very drool-worthy is their second meet-cute. When they run into each other AGAIN. Of course, they do, because their love story has just begun. P.S. these meet cute plots usually have very high steamy sex scenes for days.
4. “I See You Everywhere”
The number one best meet-cute I’ve read is when your swoony book boyfriend runs into his heroine multiple times before their romance builds in the story. It’s a classic story of hero meets heroine—again, and again, and again. Our heroine is very suspicious, as she should be. She thinks, ‘this can’t be a coincidence.’ But, it totally is. To our steamy hero, he thinks this must be fate. And our heroine?
Not so much.
What I love about this meet-cute is it gives our book boyfriend a challenge. The hero must find a way to appeal to our heroine’s (and the readers’) heart and plead their case. It forces them to lower their guards sooner, so the heroine can see all their gooey soft insides before the harder –ahem—exterior comes into play. It makes for such a good romance that it must be added to the list.
